Who Holds the Employment Cards?

2009 was a year when employers were spoilt for choice in the general employment market. An abundance of candidates keen to work resulted in lower remuneration levels for some positions. The irony is most employers were not recruiting a great deal given the market conditions.

After the traditional Christmas and New Year lull, 2010 has seen recruitment activities increase and employers enter the market in search of new talent to assist their tired employees and forge ahead with new business activities. Contract and temporary employment have seen steady improvement while permanent positions have also been in plentiful supply.

Transport & logistics is an industry that demands candidates with specialist skills and experience. There is regularly a shortage of good candidates and the age old issue of timing from an employer and employee perspective is a variable that contributes to this situation.

We have seen a return to candidates receiving multiple job offers. Employers that know & communicate their requirements, move quickly and complete their recruitment activities with diligence tend to get the best candidates in the market.

Candidates are starting to review their options again. 2009 was dominated by candidates holding onto their current employment while the early signs for 2010 suggest they are more confident about looking at employment opportunities.

It's too early to tell what the rest of 2010 will be like but if the trend from the first three months continues the employment market will be buoyant.
